After the assassination of far-right activist Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, Donald Trump claimed that leftist organizations are fueling political unrest in the United States, insisting they “should be put in jail.” He argued that groups on the left cause “tremendous violence” and that their actions surpass those of right-wing groups. Senior adviser Stephen Miller reinforced this message, labeling Democrats as a “vast domestic terror network” and vowing to deploy government resources to dismantle them.

But the available evidence tells a different story. Decades of research on extremism show that right-wing violence has been far more deadly and more common than left-wing violence in the U.S. The claims made by Trump and Miller, while politically potent, lack factual support.
