The hantavirus outbreak revealed that America may no longer be capable of leading during a public health crisis.

The hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius is not the next Covid. Experts have stressed that repeatedly. Andes hantavirus spreads through close contact, not casually through the air, and scientists believe the outbreak will likely be contained. But the real story isn’t the virus itself. It’s the response.

Because even with a relatively limited outbreak — one public health officials broadly understand and know how to manage — the United States looked slow, uncertain, and strangely absent. The episode became a stress test for America’s public health system, and the results were grim.

The outbreak was first reported to the World Health Organization on May 2. Within days, several passengers were seriously ill, three people had died, and passengers had already dispersed across multiple countries. Spain rapidly organized evacuations in the Canary Islands. France deployed infectious disease teams. The WHO coordinated contact tracing and quarantine guidance internationally.

Meanwhile, the CDC largely stood on the sidelines.

At first, the agency merely said it was “monitoring the situation.” Days passed before it activated its emergency center. American doctors received formal guidance only after passengers had already returned home. One infected American passenger was eventually flown to Nebraska for monitoring after testing positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus. The contrast with earlier outbreaks was striking.
